obs_description = The Leiden/Argentine/Bonn (LAB) HI survey is the world's first Atlas of Galactic Neutral Hydrogen (1989-2005). This is a 3D dataset: two spatial dimensions (Galactic longitude and latitude) and a velocity dimension. This 'cube HiPS' stores 891 2D sky maps, each showing hydrogen emission at a specific velocity. When opened with CDS Aladin, you can scroll through these velocity layers, effectively watching how HI gas moves across the sky at different speeds. This lets you see structures like rotating arms, high-velocity clouds, or inflows/outflows? as if peeling back the galaxy?s motion one speed layer at a time. The original dataset holds HI cloud speeds from -460 km/s to +460 km/s. The noteworthy layers are in the -257 km/s to +372 km/s range. The original dataset was largely captured with the Dwingeloo Radio Telescoop (RT), which is now a national monument managed by https://camras.nl. The RT is open for visits and demonstrations.
